Check the whole pumpkin
Choose a firm pumpkin without soft spots, mould, leaking areas or deep damage. Inspect the underside as well as the face you plan to carve. Look for a sound attached stem, but do not judge freshness by stem colour alone.
A flatter base helps display. If you want to cook the flesh, ask for an edible culinary variety rather than choosing only for carving size.
Carry it from underneath
Support the base or use both hands around the body. Do not lift a pumpkin by its stem, which can break and leave a damaged area. Children may need help with even medium-sized fruit.
Stay on open routes and follow staff instructions. Check whether pumpkins are harvested from a field or selected from a display, and whether wheelbarrows, parking and activities are included.
Wait before carving
An intact pumpkin generally keeps longer than a carved one. Store it cool, dry and ventilated, protected from frost and direct heat. Check it regularly and remove fruit that begins to rot.
Carve only a few days before your display, not weeks ahead. Warm or damp conditions can shorten its life. Supervise children with tools and use an LED light instead of an open flame.
