In the north

First fruit. Strawberry season opens the u-pick year across the northern temperate band — British Columbia, Kent, Wexford, the Hudson Valley — and gooseberries, peas and broad beans come with it.

The hedgerows carry the last elderflower and the first meadowsweet, and the earliest chanterelles show in mossy woodland after warm rain.

The solstice is the hinge of the northern year. Everything after it is downhill towards harvest, and successional sowing matters now: salads, French beans and the brassicas that will feed you in January.

In the south

Midwinter. The southern temperate band is in dormancy — pruning season, bare-root planting, garlic and broad beans going in.

Citrus is the compensation, and it is a considerable one: oranges, mandarins and lemons are at their peak across Argentina, southern Brazil, South Africa and New Zealand, exactly when there is nothing else.
